Comprehensive Nutrition Assessment
during your nutrition assessment, our registered dietician will review your current dietary habits and assess your body fat percentage and resting metabolic rate. You will discover your caloric requirements and how your body burns fat, and you will receive nutritional advice as well as customized, calorie-balanced meal plans.
Your assessment includes:
Review of Your Current Dietary Habits

Before your first visit, we ask you to track your food intake for three to five days using the tracking forms we will give you.
It is very important to accurately log your meals. Recording your actual intake allows the registered dietitian to determine how closely you meet your nutritional needs, and this will allow us to create an accurate meal plan that works with your lifestyle and helps you achieve your goals.
Resting Metabolic Rate
Your nutrition assessment will involve measuring your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). This information is vital in assessing how many calories your body needs to lose, gain or maintain your current weight.
The RMR test is done with the Indirect Calorimetry method, first measuring the amount of oxygen that your body consumes. This number is then used to extrapolate the number of calories that you burn at rest in a day.
Our technology provides on-screen and printed results in just 10 to 30 minutes. The printout is ideal for maintaining records and will help you and your clinician understand the results of the test.
Preventous is one of only a few facilities in Calgary that provides RMR testing.
Anthropometric Analysis (Body Composition)
This is a comprehensive assessment that takes into account your age, gender, height, weight and body composition. Body composition is determined by Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). BIA is considered one of the most exact and accessible methods of screening body fat.
The Preventous nutrition experts use a new way of measuring BIA that is faster, easier and less intrusive than traditional methods and includes a precision scale, making this a simple one-step process. Your dietitian inputs age, gender and height, then you step onto the platform. Electrodes in the foot sensor pads send a low, safe signal through the body. Weight is calculated automatically, along with body fat content, in less than a minute.
After Your Assessment
Once the above assessments have been completed, your nutrition team undertakes an analysis of the following in preparation for your review:
Nutritional Intake
Sophisticated diet analysis software is used to analyze the micronutrient and macronutrient status of your current intake. This enables us to determine how closely you are meeting your body’s needs for energy, vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber and other important nutrients.
The majority of our nutrients come from food but there are additions in the diet that must also be accounted for, including nutrition supplements. Fluid intake is also a major way of obtaining nutrients and must be assessed to ensure it is at a healthy level without too much caffeine, calories or unnatural ingredients.
Blood Work
Your registered dietitian, in collaboration with the medical team, will analyze your lipid, iron and vitamin D status as well as other markers to further evaluate your specific nutritional needs.
Realistic Goal Setting
You will have a detailed discussion with your registered dietitian to identify your goals and how they may be influenced by your lifestyle, needs and preferences. This information will be used to develop the meal plan you will receive during your review appointment.
