Neck wrinkles, more than any other type of wrinkle, are associated with aging. Wrinkles on the face might be attributed to worry, or frowning, or laughing, lack of sleep or simply weathering, but neck wrinkles seem to say we are just getting old.
Part of the problem is that we don’t see neck wrinkles in the same way we see facial wrinkles. Indeed, often we just don’t see neck wrinkles at all. Neck skin is thinner than facial skin and more susceptible to fine lines which are often difficult to see, partly because of shadows and partly because some of the neck is usually covered by a blouse or nightgown. When a woman uses facial creams to moisturize dry facial skin cells, often she does not apply the cream to the neck.
As we age, our skin, especially around the neck, loses much of its underlying fatty tissue and the proteins that give firmness to the skin. Losing weight also reduces the amount of fatty tissue. The pull of gravity causes the skin to sag. In extreme cases, this sagging can result in “turkey neck”, a condition obviously noticeable and negatively named.
Neck wrinkles that form on the nape are often caused by weathering. We protect our head and face from the sun, but the back of the neck is often neglected. To compensate, the skin of the nape often toughens up and becomes criss-crossed with wrinkles.
